According to Statistics Canada, 1 in 7 Canadians is food insecure. One out of every six children under the age of 18 suffers from food insecurity. “Food insecurity” is referred to as the condition of not having access to sufficient food, or food of adequate quality, to meet one’s basic needs. With nearly 9.5% of the population falling below the poverty line, food insecurity in Canada appears to directly correlate with financial issues. Household food insecurity, inadequate or insecure access to food due to financial constraints, is a serious population health problem in Canada, linked to poorer mental health, higher rates of infectious and non-communicable diseases and injuries, increased health care utilization, and premature mortality. Various studies indicate that about a third of people who rely on Canadian food banks are children, as many as up to 400,000 each month, and food bank use is rising among single-parent families.
